The Langtoft Loop (37km)

Our entry level route is a fine introduction to this part of the Wolds and is designed for fit families or those new to cycling. The landscape is characterised by gently undulating agricultural scenery, full of wide fields ploughed in neat lines and separated by knotty hawthorn hedges. The route takes you through the former important market town of Kilham before cutting back to Langtoft, on the road from Driffield. Just beyond Langtoft and along the Sledmere Road, is the route's major climb which will be a test of your stamina. After this you arrive at a major B road before turning down past the deserted medieval village of Cowlam from whose heights you have great views across the Wolds and down to Driffield. The long meandering descent takes you down pleasantly into Driffield, but watch out for the short sharp uphill section which will catch you unawares!

Driffield to Langtoft
Once you have navigated the busy Driffield bypass you are soon into the country and heading towards the former market town of Kilham. The road climbs steadily through gently rolling landscape dotted with wind turbines. A lively descent takes you into Kilham itself where you turn left at the village store and separate from the other two routes. You cut back parrallel to the village along Back Lane which takes you out on the flat and pleasant road to Langtoft.

Langtoft to Driffield
The road through Langtoft is quite busy, but you're not on it for long before your turn off at the village green which used to be a pond. Here you can refresh yourself at our feed station before you tackle the major climb of the day along Sledmere Road. This sees you rise 66 metres in just over a kilometre, but it's a single track with relatively little traffic so you can take your time. Then you're onto the main road into Sledmere which takes you towards the ancient settlement of Cowlam. It's no more than a few houses and farm buildings, but you may be able to see the old church, located not far from the site of an abandoned medieval village. You'll be at the routes highest point here (172 metres) and you'll be able to admire the view across the route just passed through and down onto Driffield itself. The single lane track meanders gradually downwards between sheep grazing pastures - a pleasant way to end the ride, but watch out for a final test, a 50 metre uphill section. Once in Driffield you rejoin the bypass before arriving back at the Showground for a much deserved pie and pint!
